Cervical smear... with immediate results

SMS Health are the only accredited clinic in the UK using the unique TruScreen cervical test which, when combined with a normal cervical smear, gives the most accurate result available.

Cervical screening

Cervical screening helps detect changes in the cervix. It checks for cells that may, if untreated, develop into cervical cancer. Catching the changes early means cervical cancer can be prevented from developing.

How does TruScreen cervical screening work?

TruScreen is a cervical probe which can identify cervical cancer or pre-cancerous cells in real time. The TruScreen probe is placed gently onto the cervix at designated places and uses low level electrical signals and light to identify abnormalities, not just in the surface layer of cells, but also the deeper layers.

Used alongside cervical smear, taken by liquid based cytology (LBC), the combined test results are more accurate than either test in isolation.

When the TruScreen test is completed an immediate result will be produced – normal, abnormal or inadequate.

TruScreen results explained

• An inadequate result means the test needs to be repeated
• An abnormal result means that a cervical smear is not required and you should be referred for a colposcopy
• A normal result is very reassuring but needs to be backed up by taking a LBC smear

Who are the cervical screening specialists?

At SMS your TruScreen cervical screening, including LBC cervical smear, will be carried out by our lead female health assessment nurse. She will take a cell sample using a plastic cervical broom that gently takes cells from the cervix. This procedure is called liquid based cytology (LBC). Your sample is then sent to our laboratory to be examined by a pathologist.

When will I get my results?

As already stated, you will receive your TruScreen result immediately. The combined results of your TruScreen and your LBC smear test will be available within a week. Your SMS screening nurse will let you know your result. If further investigations are required, with your consent, we will inform your GP and discuss with you the most appropriate follow up treatment.

How much does a combined cervical smear cost?

The TruScreen Cervical Screen costs £100.00.
