Sexually Transmitted Diseases
A sexually transmitted infection (STI) is an illness that is spread through sexual contact. In a recent survey of sexual attitudes in Great Britain, 10.8% of men and 12.6% of women aged 16-44, reported ever having a sexually transmitted infection.
The incidence of STDs is increasing rapidly at the moment. Between 1995 and 2004, the diagnosis of Chlamydia rose by 222%, gonorrhoea by 111% and syphilis by an alarming 1,497%.
Most sexually transmitted diseases can be avoided by practicing safe sex (eg using condoms). Also the fewer sexual partners you have, the lower the risk of infection.
