What is Sexual Health?

Sexual Health means different things to different people. It may be about the medical and physical problems that are associated with sexual activity, but equally it is an integral part of our self-esteem and fulfilment.

Sexual health knows no age barriers and is as relevant to 80 year olds as it is to 18 year olds. It means enjoying the sexual activity you want without causing yourself or anyone else suffering or physical or mental harm. It is also about using contraception, avoiding sexually transmitted infections and regular cervical screening.

Making positive choices about contraception and sexual health is important, not just for your physical health, but also for your general wellbeing. If you’re anxious about your sexual health, or unwell, this can have a knock-on effect on all aspects of your life including your work, your future and your relationships with your partners, family and friends.

More information is available in the pages on contraception, sexually transmitted diseases and cervical screening.
