Nurse led clinics
At SMS we are able to offer you access to specialist nurses who can offer support and advice with some specific womens’ health issues. Nurses are not in competition with doctors, they can offer a different service and this may be very appropriate for your needs. Currently we have:
Menopause specialist nurse
A nurse-led menopause clinic offers the opportunity to discuss all your concerns regarding the menopause: the symptoms associated with it; treatment options, including conventional, complimentary and lifestyle approaches; information and support during this often difficult period of life. Once a treatment or approach has been adopted, follow-up visits are available to assess how effective it has been.
Fertility specialist nurse
The nurse-led subfertility clinic is a dedicated service to improve the access for patients seeking information, advice and support in relation to treatment options that may be available to them because of difficulty in achieving a pregnancy.
A full medical history is taken and, if appropriate, all the preliminary investigations carried out. Depending on the initial consultation the couples may have a follow up appointment to see the Consultant Fertility Specialist without having to be referred by another specialist or general practitioner. This patient-friendly, efficient clinical model is aimed to help singles and couples wanting to have children to reach their objective in a much shorter period of time.
Gynaecology specialist nurse
Service under development
Nurse led Cervical screening
A consultation to establish any relevant gynaecological history is followed by a liquid based cervical smear in conjunction with an assessment by Truscreen cervical probe (link). Routine cervical smears are undertaken between the ages of 20 and 65.
Optional HPV testing and vaccination
Contracting Human Papilloma Virus is almost a normal consequence of being sexually active. There are over 100 different types of the virus and of the 4 types we test for, 2 may lead to genital warts and 2 may lead to cervical cancer. Having the test helps to determine the recommended frequency of future cervical smears.
